Radon
Did you know that radon can cause lung cancer in non-smokers and smokers alike? Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates, and is responsible for over 20,000 lung cancer deaths every year.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas produced by the decay of naturally occurring uranium in soil and ground water. Lung cancer is the only known effect on human health from exposure to radon air. Radon levels are concentrated in certain geological structures. Central Pennsylvania has a high concentration of radon caused by these geological formations.
The method used to mitigate radon depends on the levels of radon, type of soil, and type of property. Houses on slabs require a different approach than those with a basement.
Some methods used for mitigation include venting and pressurizing air under the basement floor, employing negative air pressure on the room, introducing outside air, and sealing cracks to prevent the introduction of radon gas.
